Indian Republic Day 26 January

26 January is the Republic Day of India. More than this sentence, there will be a few more sentences related to it that I believe Indian youth would know. The first question that came to my mind was: are we really concerned about this day? If one asks me, I would give a clear-cut answer, and that is no – we don’t care about this day, nor do we have a feeling of patriotism or enthusiasm when we hear Republic Day. It may be because very few teachers clearly pointed out that even after independence, we were dominion. Most of us would have listened to the term dominion for the first time 🙂

Republic Day of India – What is Dominion?

A dominion is a nation or continent that is an independent/ autonomous country but is part of the British Commonwealth. It further meant that the head of the British monarch, the Governor General, would power the nation. In short, India did not get sovereignty until 26 January 1950. Imagine you have no constitutional rules and regulations, no concept of the presidency, and no complete control over our constitution, rules, laws, and governance. It is just like someone grants bail to a prisoner but still controls their decision outside the prison, what kind of freedom it is. Since we are now not a dominion, we are fully responsible for any external or internal affairs. There is no direct or indirect influence by the British crown, which is the freedom we actually got on the day of Republic 26 January 1950. Now I can feel some enthusiasm in you to know more about it.

Republic Day – Judiciary Power

Remember, the Indian Independence Act is one of the acts of the British Parliament, passed on 18 July and came into action on 15 August, changing the status of India from British Raj to Dominion. However, the concept of the British monarchy was still there. Lord Mountbatten and later Raj Gopalachari was the Governor of the Journal of India. Now, you will have many questions about how the position of prime minister and related ministries was decided and whether the president was not there for the oath of PM on the day of independence. This day is also essential as it gave us the concept of independence of Judiciary power. I firmly believe 26 January is really a day of pride for India.
